Contract and Limited Appointment Employee Eligibility for Career Status
Key Aspects of Conversion
Eligibility: All contract employees who have worked 1,000 hours within the past 12-months as of March 20, 2026, without a break in service are converted to a regular career position as of March 20, 2026. 1,000 hours of qualifying service is equivalent to working full-time for approximately 6 months.
In addition, limited appointment employees are eligible to be converted to a career position once 1,000 hours have been attained during employment within a 12 month rolling period. Qualifying service includes all time on pay status in one or more limited appointments at the location. It does not include on-call or overtime hours.
Career conversions are effective on the first day of the month following attainment of 1,000 hours of qualifying service.
What if I don’t meet the eligibility requirements?
Contract employees who do not meet the criteria as of March 20, 2026 were converted to limited appointments.
Once a limited appointment employee has attained 1,000 hours of qualifying service within a 12-month period, they may be converted to a career position.
What are the specific benefits in being converted into a career position?
Unlike contract positions, career positions do not have a set end date that require renewal in order to continue employment. Career employees are also entitled to eligibility for the annual merit increases, regular performance evaluations, and layoff rights and benefits, including adequate notice prior to termination of employment, severance or preferential recall/rehire rights. (Please refer toArticle 12 Layoff and Reduction in Time)
Probationary period credit for employees converted to career
Employees who have worked in the same appointment in which they are directly converted will have credit toward the 6-month probationary period for the new career appointment based on their pay status. If an employee was full-time in the 12 month period preceding conversion, their 6 month probationary period was fulfilled. If an employee was 50% time in their appointment preceding conversion to a career position, they will have fulfilled 3 months of the required 6 month probationary period.
