Bargaining Update # 4: Management begins to make progress on immigration

Yesterday in Los Angeles, UAW 4811 Academic Student Employees (ASEs) met with UC management for another round of contract negotiations. At the session, management delivered a counter-proposal to the immigration proposal that ASEs submitted last month—one that makes significant progress towards just working conditions for all academic workers. This would not have happened without months of organizing, thousands of petition signatures, and meetings with college deans on every campus. But there’s much more work to be done in order to win conditions that will protect all workers from the Trump administration’s attacks. UC admin’s counter-proposal on immigration

Last month at the first bargaining session, ASEs proposed some of the strongest immigration protections in any union contract. Management’s counter-proposal takes steps towards those protections—it would:

  • Require UC admin to notify workers when ICE or other immigration enforcement is on campus

  • Prohibit UC admin from sharing immigration-related information about employees without a judicial warrant

  • Commit UC to support workers and undocumented community members by refusing collaboration with ICE

However, management has not yet committed to the legal support and expanded visa leave that thousands of workers have demanded. Academic workers will need to show UC admin that we will take whatever action is necessary to secure real protections from Trump’s attacks on immigrants and international scholars. Yesterday’s negotiations are a strong indication that the pressure is working—let’s keep it up until we secure the rights that we deserve.
