2024 Membership Update
Last Fall, members of both UAW 2865 and UAW 5810 voted by a 10-to-1 margin to amalgamate the two unions and form UAW Local 4811. Student workers also endorsed combining TAs/GSIs, Tutors, Readers, Fellows, and Trainees into a single ASE bargaining unit at campus membership meetings.
Many current UAW 4811 members initially joined Local 2865 or Local 5810 by signing a membership card specific to the ASE, PD, or AR bargaining unit prior to the amalgamation and unit merger, and before Student Researchers formed a union. A number of these members have since moved to a new job title, but are not currently contributing membership dues, and thus are not members in good standing.
On August 1, 2024, to finalize the formation of UAW 4811 and the merger of the Academic Student Employee and Student Researcher bargaining units, all union members will automatically become full, dues-paying UAW 4811 members in good standing. (Since ASEs and SRs are now in the same bargaining unit, everyone who joined Local 2865 as an ASE will begin to contribute membership dues while working as a GSR, GSRA, Trainee, or Fellow.) This means you will automatically begin paying dues whenever you are working in a UAW 4811 job title, and will be able to attend union meetings, participate in future union elections, and vote to ratify or reject future collective bargaining agreements.
Strong membership and collective financial resources are essential to protecting and improving our rights and benefits as academic workers. Anyone who does not wish to stay with the majority of your colleagues as a full dues-paying union member must revoke union membership entirely.
